General tasks of the Research Institute for Forest Ecology and Forestry which is a government foundation of the year 1984, are the expansion of knowledge for optimal protection and sunstainable fulfillment of all forest functions.
- Protection of the environment (protection of soil, water, climate, fauna and flora)
- Economic use (timber production, labour, income for forest owners)
- Improvement of quality of life (nature, leasure and sports)
The research results are of benefit to all forest owners – especially by means of advice and consultation.
Intensive cooperation on national level (e.g. in the framework of the German Union of Forest Research Organisation (DVFF)) and on the international level (e.g. International Union of Forest Research Organisation (IUFRO)) enables dealing with complex questions and avoids double efforts.
The Research Institute for Forest Ecology and Forestry ist supervised by the Ministry for Environment and Forestry Rheinland-Pfalz.
